How the ranking works.Leaderboard uses the Wilson lower bound — it asks what an idea's true approval rate is likely to be, given how many people voted. That way 9 upvotes out of 10 beats 40 out of 80, and one lone upvote can't top the board.
Trending uses a logarithmic vote score plus a time term, so the tenth vote counts far more than the thousandth and fresh ideas still get a chance. One vote per idea per person; you can change your mind.
