Professional tax in Andhra Pradesh: slabs, rules and deadlines for 2026

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana share the same 1987 statute and the same slabs, but they are separate states with separate registrations — a distinction that trips up employers who opened an office in Amaravati or Visakhapatnam after registering in Hyderabad.

YOUR PROFESSIONAL TAX

The law that applies in Andhra Pradesh

Professional tax in Andhra Pradesh is levied under the Andhra Pradesh Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1987, administered by the Andhra Pradesh Commercial Taxes Department. Article 276 of the Constitution caps what any state may charge a person under this head at ₹2,500 a year, which is why no slab anywhere in India exceeds that figure.

Who must register in Andhra Pradesh

As in Telangana, there are two routes: a registration certificate for employers deducting from staff, and an enrolment certificate for professionals and traders paying on their own account.

An Andhra Pradesh registration does not cover Telangana staff, and a Telangana registration does not cover Andhra Pradesh staff, even though the numbers are identical. Each state's department collects its own revenue.

When it must be paid

Employers remit monthly, by the 10th of the following month. Enrolled persons pay annually.

Two states, one slab table, two filings

Because the bifurcation of 2014 left both states operating the parent Act, an employer with offices in both must maintain two registrations, two monthly remittances and two sets of records — while the deduction on each payslip looks identical.

The failure mode is remitting everything under whichever registration was obtained first. The tax has been deducted correctly from the employee but paid to the wrong state, which leaves a shortfall in one jurisdiction and an unexplained credit in the other.

Who is exempt in Andhra Pradesh

If you pay late

Interest applies to late payment, with penalties for failure to register or file. Correcting a remittance made to the wrong state is administratively painful, so it is worth getting the registration right before the first payroll run.

How it affects your income tax

Professional tax paid is fully deductible from salary income under Section 16(iii) of the Income-tax Act, in both the old and the new regime. Your employer normally accounts for it when computing TDS, so it reduces taxable salary rather than being claimed separately. If you are enrolled and pay directly, keep the challans — the deduction is still available to you.

On a payslip the line usually reads "PT", "Prof. Tax" or "Professional Tax", and sits with provident fund and income tax under deductions. Our free salary slip generator includes it automatically for Andhra Pradesh.

Common questions about professional tax in Andhra Pradesh

Is professional tax the same in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana?

The slabs are identical, but they are separate taxes collected by separate departments. You need a registration in each state where you employ people.

What is deducted on a ₹25,000 salary in Visakhapatnam?

₹200 a month, being the top slab above ₹20,000. That is ₹2,400 for the year.

Do I need to register if I have one employee in Andhra Pradesh working remotely?

Generally yes, if that person works in the state and crosses the threshold. Professional tax follows where the work is done.

Is professional tax deductible from my taxable income?

Yes. The full amount paid is deductible from salary income under Section 16(iii) of the Income-tax Act, in both the old and new regimes.
