FAQ

What is the difference between a relieving letter and an experience letter?

A relieving letter confirms that an employee's resignation was accepted and states their last working day — it's proof the employee has no further obligation to the company and is free to join elsewhere. An experience letter certifies the role, tenure and conduct, mainly used to prove work history to a future employer. Many companies issue both.

Is a relieving letter mandatory in India?

No single central law mandates it by name, but it's standard HR practice, and most employers require a candidate's relieving letter from their previous job as part of background verification before confirming a new offer.

Can an employer refuse to issue a relieving letter?

It happens over notice-period disputes or pending dues, but there's no legal basis to withhold it indefinitely. Under the Code on Wages, full and final settlement — which includes handing over exit documents — is due within 2 working days of the last working day. See our FnF Settlement Calculator for what your employer owes you.

Can I generate both letters for the same employee?

Yes — fill the form once and switch between the Relieving Letter and Experience Letter tabs above; both use the same employee and company details, so you only enter information once.

Is employee data uploaded anywhere?

No. The letter is generated entirely in your browser and stored only on your device.
